China Installment #2 - My Chinese Boyfriend!
I shared this story with Tabitha last night and it is one of my favorites from the trip. We had the opportunity to go to a minority village at the conclusion of our teaching week. That meant a 2 hour drive up BEAUTIFUL mountains, bumpy roads, and fun singing with my Chinese friend, Sophie. Sophie and her friend Karen shared their village with us. Literally. Their families welcomed us into their homes and even put eggs in our backpacks to take with us! (They were hard boiled.) Anyway, Sophie has a nephew whose Chinese name I cannot pronounce. He was about 4-5 years old and ADORABLE! I tried to get his attention but he wouldn't notice me at all until I gave him...the Oreo. I don't remember which came first: the Oreo or the toy truck. But it doesn't really matter. Let's go with the Oreo. I had felt led to bring Oreos with me in my backpack to give to the kids. He was really the only little kid we saw and he followed us all around the village. When we got to Sophie's grandparents house he still was ignoring all the foreigners. And then! I remembered I had Oreos in my backpack! We were best friends from then on! When we kept walking around the village he was with me and ended up getting all of the toys I had brought as well! His face and expression over a few Oreo cookies (he ate about 3 in 2 minutes) is something I will always remember.
